This faucet was designed to carry an important innovation, in what would be a highly-used kitchen scenario. To this end its most important function -- water flow -- is made more efficient by placing the valves directly at the point from which water flows. This placement saves water and greatly increases the convenience of using the faucet. By placing the valves near the aerator operating them causes immediate change rather than an implied pause for effect as well as reducing the amount of reach necessary to use the faucet.
